DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO - Lot 177
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO Nkishi-style statue of Songye, known as “the Exorcist.” Wood, fabric, horn. This particular fetish represents the arm of exorcism. The non-figurative depiction of the face does not refer to an ancestor, but to a spirit. The holes throughout the head are the openings through which all evils—including evil spirits—must escape. This nkishi (fetish) was used in particular to drive out the Doshi, the malevolent spirit of sorcerers. Wechi, the Songye fetish-maker, used the bile of individuals who had died by ordeal to enhance the magical power of this fetish, which is concentrated in the umbilical and fontanelle areas, beneath the horn. H.: 40 cm
