Raymond Léon RIVOIRE (1884–1966) The Javelin Thrower, circa 1925–1930 Bronze proof with a brown-green patina Signed on the javelin H 44; W: 56 cm (without the marble base) Raymond Léon RIVOIRE, a renowned French sculptor of the Art Deco movement, exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1905. He received a silver medal there in 1921 and a gold medal in 1929. The creator of numerous commissioned works in France and abroad, he also created a sculpture of Neptune for the ocean liner Normandie. This sculpture of an athlete appears to be unpublished in the documented body of his work. Nevertheless, it is known that he participated in the official competition for the 1924 Paris Olympic Games in the “sculpture” category. On that occasion, he reportedly presented a javelin thrower during the artistic competitions at the Grand Palais.
