Roger DERIEUX (1922-2015) - Lot 170
Roger DERIEUX (1922-2015) "Vanitas", 1995 to 2012 Collage on cardboard 76x56 cm (Framed) Note: Roger Dérieux's family has decided, for this sale in tribute to the artist, to dispose of this intimate landmark work. It is a synthetic collage of his entire life and work, a richly illustrated journey through many themes: - its title, Vanité, which sums up his humble, sensitive character and alludes to the Old Masters. - a diverted form of self-portraiture (he didn't do many). Roger was a very old man when he completed this work, begun in 1992 and finished in 2012. He was over 90 at the time, and died 3 years later. The skeleton is his. - the reference to the Surrealists, who determined his vocation: the butterfly, the playing card - a black-and-white photograph of himself as a young man (always serious and elegant) - music (the score) - women, his muses (his mother Isabelle Thomas, Reine and Anne his two wives, his friends...: the Queen of Hearts) - Copenhagen (its green bell tower) - Salzburg (black-and-white photography) - his extensive correspondence with his many loyal friends: the couriers - Francis Ponge, his poet friend: the pear, inside and out (famous lines: "Nothing can escape from this oblong vase, without a base, attached to its branch by a pedicle...") - a representation mixing figuration and abstract collages
