Mireille BINOUX (1929-2014) - Lot 25
Mireille BINOUX (1929-2014) Onions on a White Plate, 1955 Oil on canvas, signed M. GOUIRAND of her maiden name (rare) lower right and dated 38x46 cm Single stretcher (Restored in 2019) This 1955 canvas is the oldest referenced in our sale and in Mireille Binoux's corpus. It was painted during her apprenticeship in Paris. She was 26 at the time, living in maid's quarters in the bohemian Paris of Saint Germain des Prés, where she studied in the same studio as Bernard Buffet. In this post-war era, Mireille lived on small expedients and low fees as a theater extra, supplementing a meager scholarship to finance her studies. This frugal performance is a fine illustration of her life as a young artist who still signs Gouirand, her maiden name.
