Frédéric LEGRIP (1817-1871) - Lot 27
Frédéric LEGRIP (1817-1871) Rue de la vieille Lanterne, Souvenir de Gérard de Nerval, 1855 [Gérard de Nerval (1808-1855)] Oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated on reverse, signed, dedicated: "à mon ami Lemoine" dated November 5, 1857 on stretcher 28 x 41.5 cm This very curious and very modern macabre composition, which seems to represent the poet's last friends who have come to pay their last respects to him in the gloomy street where he chose to take his own life by hanging himself from a sewer grate, is truly astonishing in the corpus of an artist more accustomed to classical landscape painting. Strong links seem to unite the painter and the poet, since there exists a drawing by Legrip, depicting the courtyard of the rue de la Vieille-Lanterne in Paris, where Gérard de Nerval (1808-1855) was found hanged on the night of January 25 to 26, 1855. Dated March 13 of the same year, this brown ink sketch captures the atmosphere of the narrow, dark courtyard where the drama unfolded, and bears the inscription at bottom right: "Maison rue de la vieille cantine à Paris / où fut tué le poète Gérard de Nerval" ("House on rue de la vieille cantine in Paris / where the poet Gérard de Nerval was killed"). This drawing is in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris (no. D.1764) and reproduced in Philippe Burty and Maurice Tourneux, L'âge du romantisme, Paris, Éditions E. Monnier Cie, 1887-1888, p.12. (Crackling, small dents and lifting).
