BUFFON. - Lot 55
BUFFON.
Œuvres complètes de Buffon, augmentées par M.F. Cuvier de deux volumes supplémentaires.
Paris, Pillot éditeur, Salmon libraire, 1829-1832; 28 volumes in-8, green half calf, smooth spine richly decorated and gilded with very elegant decorative roulettes and palettes, cold fleurons, dark green title-pieces, marbled edges (period binding): portraits of Buffon after Devéria and of Cuvier, engraved in intaglio by Alexandre Masard; 4 folding maps 8 figures in black, one of which is folding, and 279 hors-texte figures engraved in intaglio, carefully watercolored, including 56 for the two supplement volumes.
Apart from a few traces of acidity, common to papers of the period, this is a very fine set, in a uniform, highly decorative binding in very good condition, accompanied by high-quality illustrations. A must-read: the two introductory texts by Cuvier, who was one of the greatest naturalists of his time and remains one of the great figures of science.
