[D'HOLBACH] les prêtres démasqués ou des iniquités du clergé - Lot 28
[D'HOLBACH] les prêtres démasqués ou des iniquités du clergé chrétien. Translated from the English. London (s.n.) Amsterdam, Marc Michel REY, 1768; in 8 (165 mm; rel.171 mm) glazed fawn calf, triple fillet framing the boards, spine decorated with grotesque gilding of a grid, dark green title page, roulette on the edges, interior roulette (period binding); [4], 180 pages. Rare first edition (Tchemerzine III-718) of this work, which was "largely redone by Baron d'Holbach". One of the financiers of Diderot and d'Alembert's great Encyclopédie, Paul Henri d'Holbach also contributed many articles to its text; he was one of the leading thinkers of the Enlightenment and a staunch opponent of the Catholic religion. This work is cited by Pierre Larousse in the article devoted to the Baron. A fine copy in a well-established, highly decorative binding. Ex-libris Elie Faujas-Claret and Henri Edouard Weber. Expert : Cabinet Van Eecloo
