Gérard EDELINCK (1640-1707) - Lot 13
Gérard EDELINCK (1640-1707) Faithful representation of the great miracle that happened in the Blessed Sacrament in the parish of Ulmes de Saint Florent, near the city of Saumur, the second of June 1668 [sic] Etching, designated with the name of the author in the lower right corner and embellished with a long explanatory text, which we reproduce in-extenso in a version transcribed in contemporary French: "Représentation fidèle du grand miracle arrivé dans le saint Sacrement en la Paroisse des Ulmes de Saint Florent, près de la ville de Saumur, le deuxième du mois de juin 1668. On Saturday in the octave of the Blessed Sacrament, during the salute when the parish priest was singing his words: Verbum caro, panem verum, there appeared in the sun instead of the host, the form of a man, who had light brown hair, falling on his shoulders, his face shining, his hands crossed one on the other, having the right hand on the left and the body dressed in a white robe in the shape of an alb. This apparition lasted more than a quarter of an hour, as much on the Tabernacle where the Blessed Sacrament was exposed as on the altar, after the priest had lowered it there, to make it see more closely to the people, following which a small cloud was formed which enveloped it and which was dissipated incontinently left to see the Holy Host in its ordinary figure as before this miracle. This relation is drawn word for word from the pastoral letter of Monseigneur the Bishop of Angers on this subject ". 44 x 30,5 cm The Bibliothèque Nationale de France holds a copy of this print in its collections Small stains in the lower part and pinholes in the corners
