André COTTAVOZ (1922-2012) "Bistro" Oil on panel, signed lower left. Circa 1960. 17,5x24 cm (framed, American box) Provenance: Private collection, Muriel and Florent Cottavoz. The qualities of a work do not lie in its size alone. As proof, this "Parisian bistro" (small format), signed André Cottavoz, dated 1960. It has all the maturity of a promising painter, who will prove to be one of the most brilliant of the Sanziste generation - with Charrin, Fusaro and Truphémus - in Lyon (1948-50). Everything is interwoven, everything is in place, everything is refined, and definitely major. The almost tone-on-tone tones, which the painter masters in a fragmented and multiple block (with his generous, "full paste" touch), will make all his success. The skilfully sketched characters hold together, by dint of jostling each other in the tangle of the decor, known as "bistro". This is a great Cottavoz, as we knew and loved him. A work exclusively for connoisseurs... BG
