Georges MANILLIER (1906-1981) Bathers in the Mediterranean, allegory of summer. 1949 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right. 65x80 cm (Two dents) Prov: Edouard Chapotat, by descent. Painting offered to the artist in gratitude for the portrait done by the latter the same year. Bibl:Edouard Chapotat, painter and ceramist from the Rhone Valley. Color Gang. 2010. Reproduced on p. 121 Georges Manillier was fascinating when he talked to me about his painting in his studio on rue Garibaldi in Lyon in 1979. Self-taught, he did not hide the colour of the (communist) party, of which he was a proud militant. He was a very good teacher and many of his students owe him a lot, especially Alain Pouillet from Lyon. He often painted characters (with claims... you can't do it again), still lifes and female nudes. He used paper models (taken from newspapers such as "Paris Hollywood", the ancestor of "Lui" and "Playboy" magazines), because his wife forbade him to receive live models... He was faithful in his friendships, as proof, in 1949 Edouard Chapotat -when he painted his portrait- Georges Manillier (in exchange) offered him this beautiful and rare painting "Allegory to the summer" which is a flagrant tribute to the sublimated woman, but also, to the joy of living simply, and more especially -after the war- to the recovered freedom...
