Collection of works by Marie-Josèphe Dyen dite Gohelle (1918-2018), Bernard Damiano (1926-2000) , Roger Derieux (1922-2015), Philippe BALDACCHINO (Born 1962), Breyten BREYTENBACH (1939) and others from the 20th century.
Marie-Josèphe DYE. was born in Saint-Etienne in 1918. She chose GOHELLE as her artist's name in homage to the happy childhood she had spent in Sains-en-Gohelle, with her parents, brother and twin sisters. A painter from Lyon, she said: "I, an illustrious stranger, have worked with artists, first and foremost my teachers. They all influenced me in different ways": these were the great Lyonnais painters of the time, Huguette Carron, Pierre Pelloux, Henri Vieilly, Louis Charrat and Jean Couty.
She also forged links with a number of other artists: Paul Janin, Maximilien Luce, Crikor Garabetian and Lucien Fontanarosa.
Gohelle rented a painting studio from Pierre Combet-Descombes, at 22 rue Thomassin. Later, against her husband's wishes, she bought an entresol at 1 place Antoine Vollon, where she set up her studio.
The media and techniques used for her work were diverse, ranging from fixé sous verre and painting on wood to installation and patchwork.
She preferred striking faces to classical beauties. Not to say caricature, but she liked to force certain features, not always the most attractive, but the most telling.
Marie-Josèphe was a woman full of contradictions - modern, independent and liberated yet devout, concerned with propriety and very attached to her family.
