The final painting, Le petit mendiant , missing or not currently located, is known from a photograph by
by Robert Jefferson Bingham in 1858 at the Musée d'Orsay (PHO 1983 165 159 19) and by engravings and lithographs
lithographs distributed by the Goupil workshop (then, after 1870, by photoglyphic prints, repr. Op.cit.
P.195) . In the early 1840s, after completing the major project to decorate the hemicycle of the
beaux-arts, Paul Delaroche produced several intimate family portraits. He depicts his wife and two children
and his two children, Horace and Philippe (Musée d'Art de Nantes, and Luxembourg, Fondation JP
Pescatore Foundation). Our study is a variation on this theme, in which the artist plays with Raphaelesque motifs
Raphaelesque motifs of the Holy Family, such as the Madonna of the Chair (Pitti Palace, Florence).
