Horace VERNET (1789 - 1863) The battle of Fontenoy (1745) Original canvas Height : 45,5 cm Width : 93,2 cm provenance : Delaroche-Vernet family Exhibition: Horace Vernet 1789-1863, Rome, Académie de France, and Paris, Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, 1980, , p.77, n°50 Our canvas is a first idea for the large-format work commissioned by Charles X in 1827 for the first room of the Conseil of the Conseil d'État in the Tuileries Palace. It was eventually installed under Louis-Philippe in the Galerie des Batailles at Versailles, enlarged by Henri Frédéric Schopin. It was exhibited at the Salon of 1836 and is still still in place. During the War of the Austrian Succession, at the Battle of Fontenoy on May 11, 1745, the victory of French troops Louis XV captured the city of Tournai. On his white horse, the king is accompanied, behind him, by the Dauphin. They face the Marshal de Saxe and other cavalrymen, who show the torn flags flags taken from the enemy. The final composition presents several variations, the group of father and son embracing his son is moved from left to right. Expert: Cabinet Turquin
