Rare set of 9 professional Guignol puppets,... - Lot 66 - Artenchères
Rare set of 9 professional Guignol puppets, Paris, 1930s We find the Cadet, Guignol, the thief, the bourgeois, the military man, the prestidigitateur (who is said to be the puppet of Georges Meliès, who worked as a prestidigitateur at the Labelle theater), Guillaume II, the gendarme and probably Gnafron (with sulfur eyes). Heads and hands in carved wood, each puppet wears its original clothes, with hooks or fabric for hanging. Average dimensions: H: 60 cm (Wear from use) Provenance: Théâtre Guignol ANATOLE (E. Labelle owner), concessionaire at Buttes Chaumont in Paris. : Enclosed is an original letter of recommendation dated 1934, signed by Labelle, from the same source. Bibliography: objects that tell the story Catherine Férey and Simone Blazy. P24/25 reproduced. The Castelet from this set of puppets is currently housed at the Musée Gadagne in Lyon. Professional puppets are extremely rare on the market, but they have made the history of the Guignol theater. (Small, mass-produced toy puppets for children are more regularly seen on the market). In addition to the fact that the prestidigitateur is said to be the puppet used by Georges Méliès, his face bears characteristic features reminiscent of the pioneer of cinematography.
