Switzerland, early 20th century - Lot 143
Switzerland, early 20th century Tree of life cross Crucifix of altar in fruit wood Small accidents and missing parts H. 75 cm A fine example of craftsmanship, this carved wooden altar crucifix evokes, through its ivy, symbol of eternal life, its roots and scrolls, the medieval iconography of the cross associated with the tree of life which, through its fruits, offers eternal life. The iconographic and symbolic repertoires developed here are reminiscent of the crucifixes that came out of the workshops of woodcarvers in the Brientz region in Switzerland, whose craft was very successful at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
