Gilded bronze clock, on one side decorated... - Lot 49 - Artenchères
Gilded bronze clock, on one side decorated with the representation of Psyche holding a cup in which butterflies are drinking in one hand, and a stick with a fool's head. Psyche is trampling an owl. On the other hand, a column surmounted by an antique ewer. The rectangular base is richly decorated with a flowering basket in the centre, flanked by scrolls and horns of plenty. The circular enamelled dial with Roman numerals for the hours and a railway, signed CAILLAUD in Paris, is surmounted by a small mobile mirror (psyche). First half of the 19th century. 42 x 32,5 x 11 cm The iconography of this clock is interesting and unique, if it takes the codes of the representation of the young lover of Love, this one is represented crushing an owl. This owl could be seen as the symbol of wisdom, trampled, in opposition to the sceptre with the head of a fool held in the hand. This allegory is certainly an allegory to the madness of love.
