BUFFON (Georges-Louis Leclerc de). NATURAL HISTORY OF BIRDS. Paris, de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1770-1786. 10 volumes large in-4° (323 x 240 mm), marbled calf, spine ornamented, red morocco title-pieces and green morocco tomato-pieces, red edges (period binding). THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND CELEBRATED BOOK BY BUFFON, considered the most remarkable French ornithological book of the 18th century. At the time, it was one of the most complete and meticulous works on birds ever published. It is illustrated with 971 magnificent plates (out of 973) engraved on copper from drawings by François-Nicolas Martinet under the direction of Daubenton, most of them signed in the engraving or in the frame, all of them very delicately watercolored by hand and placed in a yellow watercolor frame, showing birds from all over the world. Excellent condition inside, the colors have remained bright. Very rare foxing, some pages slightly browned, traces of spotting on several boards, leather missing from the corner of the board of volume 9, and on one board of volume 6, a damaged cap in volume 1 and some traces of wear.
